Trax Classics Presents Rewind (Review)

Where disco was lush and romantic, Chicago-based house was the dark and cynical sound of the late ’80s (read: AIDS, Reaganomics). The compilation Trax Classics Presents Rewind chronicles the genre’s salad days of such bass-heavy anthems as Jamie Principle’s ”Cold World,” Adonis’ nihilistic ”No Way Back,” and ”You Used to Hold Me,” on which Xaviera Gold seems to revel in lost love. Hard-edged music from tough-luck times. B
