Call it Jigga’s funk album. Jay-Z’s last two full-lengths had a futuristic, otherworldly feel, but The Dynasty Roc La Familia (2000- )sounds earthy and retro with horn squalls, low-riding bass, Latin-jazz timbals, and disco pings and whistles. The rapper’s ever-clever lyrics alternately celebrate the gangsta high life and lament the circumstances that led him to it. ”Where Have You Been,” about his estrangement from his dad, reveals the unresolved pain behind the pimpin’.
